On January 13th the Sunset Advisory Board wrapped up its business and recommended changes regarding the Texas Racing Commission (“TRC”). The recommendation, which will now be put into legislation, is to administratively attach the Texas Racing Commission to the Office of the Comptroller. In adopting the changes, the Sunset Advisory Board’s goal is to create efficiencies, while retaining the Racing Commission Board that will still regulate racing in Texas. This legislation will now work its way through the legislative process.
The official associations of the horse industry do not view this change to the TRC administrative structure as adverse to the business of the Texas racing industry, and are optimistic the changes will result in greater efficiencies in agency operations. We will continue to monitor the legislation and provide updates during the legislative session.
